Towards the end of the movie, psycho ex-boyfriend David kills the police officer guarding heroine Emily and her mother Ashley (Thompson) before grabbing her in the kitchen and holding her at gunpoint. When Emily returns home, she finds David in the living room with Ashley, having tied her to a chair with black rope (hands behind the backrest) and tightly cleave gagged with a white cloth knotted in front.
After ranting about how miserable his life was being raised by his abusive mother, Ashley's cries catch David's attention and he asks if she has something to say. After she gives a muffled "Yes!", David ungags Ashley and she pleads with David to let Ashley go, even sympathizing with the abuse he suffered. This fails, as David intends to share a family dinner with Emily and Ashley before killing them and taking his own life. It doesn't come to this point, however, as Ashley manages to work her hands free and help her daughter subdue David.
